Ten thousand people a month have been streaming through the gates of the upgraded Coffs Harbour War Memorial Olympic Swimming Pool since it was officially opened last December.

"The latest figures show that there were 40,000 visitors in the first four months, which is a phenomenal result," Coffs Harbour Mayor, Keith Rhodes said. "We knew that there had been a very positive response to the $5m refurbishment, but statistics like this underline just what a success the upgrade has been."The funds were spent on creating a new, covered and heated 25 metre pool, a zero depth toddler splash pad and an outdoor cafe area. In addition the 50 metre solar heated pool and change facilities were refurbished. "The really good news is that , now we can have a heated, enclosed pool, people can carry on swimming right through the winter," Cr Rhoades said."

A wide range of aquatic activities are now available at the pool complex including swimming lessons for all age groups, squad training, water pol, aqua aerobics and lap swimming. It also offers a venue for children's birthday parties and special events.

Hidroplay and LatiTube are exhibiting at the Aalara Trade Exhibition. Come and say hello and have an up close and personal look at our products. Looking forward to seeing you there!!

Ride Of The Future

Pipe Dream Now A Reality

Wave Of Interest for Coffs Developed Surf Simulator

STEVE Kriticos says his pipe dream, the Latitube wave simulator, has effectively captured the rush, velocity and intensity of a barrelling wave.

The amazing development, stored in the Coffs Harbour warehouse of Swimplex Aquatics, presents massive international possibilities – not to mention a new meaning to the term “tube riding”.

Unlike other wave simulators and wave pools, the Latitube pumps water over a flexible 20mm mat know as “the curtain ride surface”, which is similar in feel to a backyard trampoline.

Harnessing the energy of a 50,000-litre water pump, the prototype can change the shape and the type of wave the operator wants to ride.

The electronic settings can throw up left and right-handed barrels and pits ranging from 1.5 to 3 metres high.

All the while, the boardrider floats on water pumped through jets from a large water tank.

“Basically the Latitube reproduces the required liquid energy and velocity of a big wave,” Mr Kriticos said.

“It’s the invention I’ve spent years trying to bring to reality, and here it is.”

Placing total faith in his idea, Steve threw every cent he could muster into the Latitube.

After developing the concept, he reached an agreement with Swimplex Aquatics, the local company which recently completed the upgrade of the Coffs Harbour Olympic Swimming Pool.

“We could see the instant potential and possibilities for this product when Steve came to us four years ago,” company director Geoff Leaver said.

“The Latitube has worldwide potential and it sure has been a long road getting to its launch.”

Tested out by former leading Australian bodyboarder Michael “Eppo” Epplestun, the Latitube got a big thumbs up from the one-time world champion.

“He loved the potential of being able to train people to surf on it, and improve their wave riding technique while standing there right next to them.”

Mr Leaver said the company has approached the Lands and Property Management Authority over the scope for a wave simulator to be included in an aquatic centre proposal, suggested for the Coffs Harbour Showground.

“While it’s still very much just a proposal at this point, we believe it would be a great tourist attraction in Coffs Harbour, where the Latitube has been developed.

“The thing about the Latitube is that two girls, who were first-timers to surfing, were riding the wave simulator at the launch like absolute professionals,” he said.

NEW WATERSLIDE FOR COBAR Grand Opening October 2011

The new waterslide at the Cobar Memorial Swimming Pool will be up and running soon. The 51m long flume is fully enclosed - for safety reasons - and the unique design aims to give a ‘psychedelic’experience to users.

 The tower is 6.4m high and the design is quite similar to the previous slide, which had to be
decommissioned as it was no longer structurally sound. The old slide serviced the community for over 20 years. As part of the project, the pool at the base of the slide has also beenrefurbished to remove leaks.The project was funded by both the Australian Government and Cobar Shire Council and the project was awarded to Swimplex Aquatics.

 Water park, surf museum for Coffs

A SURF-THEMED water park is the biggest and boldest idea floated for redevelopment of the Coffs Harbour Showground.

Concept plan: The Surf’N’Slide Park at Coffs Harbour Showground.

A SURF-THEMED water park incorporating waterslides, a wave simulator and a surf museum is the biggest and boldest idea floated for redevelopment of the Coffs Harbour Showground.

Swimplex Aquatics director Geoff Leaver has submitted the concept proposal for a ‘Surf’N’Slide’ Park to the Land and Property Management Authority, which recently exhibited a future land use strategy for part of the Showground.

“Coffs Harbour needs a new attraction to add life and soul to the town,” Mr Leaver said.

Mr Leaver’s aquatic facilities firm, based in Coffs Harbour, was responsible for the $5 million redevelopment of the Coffs Harbour War Memorial Swimming Pool.

His proposal incorporates an updated version of Coffs Harbour’s popular Aquajet, with multiple waterslide rides; a ‘lazy river’ complete with a wave action section for inflatable tube riding; a children’s large lagoon pool with slides and water activity features; a bumper boat pool to boost winter patronage; a bandstand for live entertainment; a café with alfresco seating; a licensed bar; snack outlets; a surf and souvenir shop and a surf school.

Two unusual features of his proposal are for the introduction of the Latitube, described by Mr Leaver as the ‘the first standing wave real surf simulation device’, and the relocation of 82-year-old Scott Dillon’s Legends Surf Museum at Sapphire, which is threatened by Pacific Highway relocation work.

“The Aquajet demonstrated that a ‘pocket’ water park was viable and that was when the population was half the size it is now,” Mr Leaver said.

“Adding to this need is showcasing home-grown inventions and finding a new location for the surfing museum. It all meshes together as an innovative concept.

“Our research and design department is about to release to the world the first standing wave real surf simulation device.

“The release will be the culmination of eight years of development by the investor and three years by Swimplex as his licensee and will focus world attention on Coffs Harbour.

“The city will be the logical location to showcase the product and its ongoing evolution.”

He said the future of the Legends Surf Museum in its present location looked bleak and Mr Dillon was already fielding offers from Western Australia to take most of his priceless exhibits.

Coffs Harbour had lost the Aquajet when it left to make way for new enterprises, Mr Leaver said.

“Its demise was a sad blow for Coffs Harbour and a bitter loss which is still felt to this day.

“This will be a unique concept, being a water park that is primarily focused on surfing.

“The park will be themed around surfing and even the buildings will be shaped like surfboards.

“The facility will have the potential to make Coffs Harbour the surfing capital of Australia and possibly the world.

“Our research reveals that surfing tours have become very popular among backpackers. At least one coach a day passes through Coffs Harbour and the park would make Coffs Harbour a natural destination and stopover, and could open up budget accommodation possibilities in other areas of the showground.

“The proposed Surf’N’Slide Park is not a Gold Coast-style theme park. It is a pocket attraction designed specifically to meet the needs of Coffs Harbour its residents and its visitors.”

Mr Leaver said the north-west corner of the showground fronting the Pacific Highway was an ideal venue for the proposal with 10,000 square metres of flat ground currently unused with the exception of occasional events like circuses and the weekend used car sales, all of which could be accommodated elsewhere.

He said the proposal was designed to start a conversation with the Land and Property Management Authority on the possibility of a long-term lease.

It’s official... pool open for fun DEVELOPMENT SINCE taking over the running of the pool four years ago Sue Hutchison and Iain Jones had a vision – to run a facility that could provide safe outdoor activities for the whole family all year round. That vision has finally become a reality with the recently upgraded swimming complex opening with much praise three weeks ago. Whether it’s spending the weekend playing in the outdoor Olympic pool, learning to swim in the indoor heated pool, squad for fitness or competition, or an outdoor fitness session – the pool is the place to be. Since its renovation Coffs Coast residents can now relax with a coffee under an umbrella while the kids play in the colourful and safe zero depth splash pad or keep warm in the enclosed heated swimming pool. “We would like to congratulate the Coffs Harbour City Council on the opening of this newly-refurbished pool complex” Ms Hutchison said. “We would also like to thank the Hogbin family for their generous contribution to making this facility a reality. “The 25-metre heated pool has really impressed everybody – we’ve had people say this is the best pool facility they’ve seen in regional Australia. “And when you can walk through the gate and see a family friendly facility complete with children’s playground – it’s come a long way from the old-fashioned pool it once was.” Coffs Harbour City Council’s Jason Bailey, project manager for the upgrade, said the initial goals of the upgrade had grown since it was first brought up several years ago. “Council’s initial goal was to solve the problems with the leaking 50mpool and outdated plant equipment, however, as the project was investigated further, additional opportunities continued to present themselves and the project expanded to include the indoor pool and additional upgrades to ancillary facilities,” Mr Bailey said. While informally opened on November 1, the new pool complex will be officially opened next Wednesday, December 1. According to pool managers, in excess of 3500 people have walked through the pool gates in the past three weeks as general public, with another 2000 students using the facility.

WEST WYALONG'S POOL REOPENS
Monday 22, Nov 2010
The completion of the $2 million renovation has come just in time for summer.Hundreds of community members enjoying the new facilities and sunshine at the official opening of the Holland Park complex.“The community was absolutely wrapped about the whole thing. We had over five hundred people attend the opening on Saturday,” Bland Shire Council Community Services Acting Director Adele Casey said. Work began in April this year, and despite delays due to wet weather, the complex boasts a 50m Olympic swimming pool. “This pool and the specifications have been accredited by FINA to the point that we are about to hold any state or national swimming championships here and any record so recorded would hold and be recognised by FINA,” Bland Shire Mayor Neil Pokoney said. Nine lucky people were pulled out of a tin to be the first to make a splash in the new pool - eight took to the blocks and one on the diving board.The works also include a new grandstand seating area and this splash pad-play area for the little ones. The multi-million dollar upgrade to the town's only pool has been a long time coming.“The upgrades have been needed for a while. The original pool that we've replaced was built in 1936,” Casey said. This water slide and other inflatables also popular with youngsters - some showing off their skills on the diving board.The new facilities providing the community with an improved swimming centre.Despite some scrutiny about opening hours, council says a compromise has been reached.
COFFS HARBOUR'S POOL UPGRADE REOPENS ON TIME AND ON BUDGET

09-11-2010

AQUATICS - FITNESS - RECREATION - PLAY - TECHNOLOGY
The major upgrade of the Coffs Harbour War Memorial Olympic Pool has been completed and the facility has reopened.
The $5.4 million upgrade includes outdoor and indoor solar-heated pools, a new kiosk, new change rooms and a splash pad for children.
The project manager for the redevelopment, Jason Bailey, says the old pool was losing thousands of gallons of water through leaks, and it had to be upgraded, stating “the old pool facility didn't meet a lot of requirements as far as health turnover rates and also it was leaking quite substantially.
"The refurbishment as far as bringing that into line has been really important."
Based on a design brief by Facility Design Group Architects, the project involved:
* Renovation of the 50 metre pool to FINA length standards with wet deck collection gutters;
* New soiled water and filtered water reticulation to the 50 metre pool;
* New compliant sand filtration plant for the 50 metre pool;
* New multi-function indoor heated 25 metre pool and plant;
* A children's splash pad with interactive water toys;
* Modernising of changerooms, management and kiosk facilities;
* Concrete grand stand seating; and
* A mix of modern shade structures.
Swimplex Aquatics won the 'design and construct' tender based on the use of the Myrtha Pool RenovAction® technology system.
The technology consists of pre-engineering the pool from Stainless Steel panels with a durable heat bonded PVC surface.
As Mark McLaughlin of Swimplex Aquatics explains,"there are over 60 Myrtha commercial pools now in Australia," adding that "this project will follow on from our success in renovating municipal pool sites at Orange, Forbes, Cobar, Young and Port Pirie."
Work on the project began just after Easter this year and were completed at the end of last month in time for the start of the summer swimming season.
Bailey was delighted that the project was completed on time and on budget, adding “the end result for the community is that they're going to have a fantastic aquatic facility.
"It's going to be available all year round and can cater to a really wide cross section of community needs.”
